Beirut, Oct 9 (CMC) -- The Syrian rebels said on Wednesday they had stopped fighting against President Bashar al-Assad's forces in two towns in the west of the country, citing the Israeli-backed truce, activists said.
For the past two days, the Syrian National Council said in a statement that "troops and their (defensive) positions withdrew" from two towns on Syria's border with Lebanon, Baqa al-Gharbiya in Idlib and Bosra in Damascus.
"The Syrian people are proud of the fact that they managed to lay down their weapons, to protect their humanity, their humanity has been saved and their rights have been reinstated," the statement said.
"We declare the end of the regime's massacres against the Syrian people."
An FSA spokesman told the pro-opposition news agency, Rami Abdul-Rahman, that troops and government forces have withdrawn from four towns in the area, "including Baqa al-Gharbiya and Bosra", and that 10 soldiers have been killed.
Abdul-Rahman said the rebels then took control of areas, but said they would keep on fighting until Assad leaves power.
"The Syrian people, the army's ranks and its military bases will all be liberated as long as the regime and the ruling class are there," he said.
'A second chance'
The opposition are calling this a second chance for the two areas, which were the scene of some of the most violent clashes in Syria's two-year civil war, the first time they have surrendered unconditionally to the rebels.
Wissam Tarif, spokesman for the Syrian National Council, described the move as "the first step towards the fall of Bashar al-Assad."
"The fall of this regime is near," he said. "The people of the whole country are expecting it and want it."
The rebel advance on the towns, which had been held by the government's forces since July and are a few kilometres (miles) from the Lebanese border, was organised on social media.
One group, called the "Bayadeh tribe", posted a video on Facebook of people in the town of Bosra chanting: "Here is your second chance."
Dozens of people have been killed in the latest uprising, according to activists and state media.
Fighting has intensified in recent days, especially in a district of Homs and in Damascus. 0b46394aab
